Information about the Laos visa

There are a total of 14 different types of visas in Laos, but only the Tourist Visa (T-B3), which is valid for three months and entitles you to a 30-day stay in Laos, is relevant for tourists. You can get the tourist visa either “on arrival” or in advance at the Laotian embassy.

To apply, you must present a passport that is valid for at least 6 months, the fees in cash or proof of the transfer, as well as the completed visa application and a biometric passport photo. Postal delivery is also possible, in which case enclose a stamped and self-addressed envelope. The processing time at the embassy is about 5 working days.

Laos: Entry without a visa

Entry to Laos without a visa is neither possible for Germans and Austrians, there is a special regulation for Swiss (see "Special regulation for Swiss"). You have the option to get a visa on arrival at the border or at the airport, or to apply for it in advance at the Laotian embassy.

Laos: Visa on arrival (border / airport)

The Laotian Tourist Visa is also available “upon arrival”. In that case, fill out the application on the plane or at the airport or at the relevant land border. Of course, you must also present a passport photo, your passport and the visa fee in cash.

Your application will be processed on site and the visa will be glued to your passport. You can get your visa on arrival at the international airports in Vientiane, Luang Prabang and Pakse as well as at many national borders (see. "To Laos by land").

Attention: As the Federal Foreign Office reports, the Visa on Arrival will no longer be issued at the following nine international border crossings:

  • From December 31, 2019: Pang Hok / Phongsaly Province (border with Vietnam), Nam Soy / Province Houaphanh (border with Vietnam), Nam Ngeun, Province / Xayabouly (border with Thailand)
  • From March 31, 2020: Nam Kanh / Province of Xiengkhouang (border with Vietnam), Savannakhet International Airport, Nam Heuang Friendship Bridge / Province of Xayabouly (border with Thailand)
  • From 30.06.2020: Nam Phao / province of Bolikhamxay (border with Vietnam), Na Pao / province of Khammouane (border with Vietnam), Phoukeua / province of Attapeu (border with Vietnam)

Since July 2019, Laos has also been issuing e-visas for Germans, Austrians and Swiss.

But be careful! The eVisa is only available for entry at Wattay International Airport in the capital Vientiane, as well as at Lao-Thai Friendship Bridge I!

Obtaining the e-visa is very easy: Visit the official website and open the application form under "Apply eVisa". There you enter your personal data and upload a passport photo (size 4 × 6 cm) and the first page of your passport as a scan file.

You can then pay your visa fees by credit card - and you're done. Fees are $ 45 for Germans, $ 50 for Austrians, and $ 46 for Swiss.

After three working days at the latest, you should have received an email from the Laotian visa office with the so-called "Visa Approval Letter" attached. You must print it out and present it with your passport at the Laotian border.

There is a QR code on the approval letter, which is scanned by the border official. Next you get the entry stamp and can start your Laos adventure.

The e-visa entitles you to a 30-day stay in Laos with a single entry.

Laos visa for children

Children need their own visa, the costs are the same as for an adult. Children up to 12 years of age are allowed to enter with the children's passport, after which a normal passport is required for entry.

Important note about your passport

Your passport must be valid for at least 6 months at the time of entry. The temporary passport is accepted.

Tips for entering Laos

Information about entering by plane

Entering Laos by plane is not a problem from the immediate neighboring countries and issuing the Visa on Arrival is also easy. The only problem is the flight connections. There are no direct flights from Europe, and flights from Thailand, Vietnam or Cambodia are surprisingly expensive.

For this reason, many travelers choose the land route, because Laos is the only inland Southeast Asia that has many national borders. You can read more about this in the next paragraph.

To Laos by land: at these border crossings you get your visa

Due to the expensive flight connections, many tourists like to take the land route if they want to go to Laos. The entry procedure is just as unproblematic as at international airports, only you have to take into account that you do not get a visa at every border crossing. Here you will find an overview of the border stations that issue Visa on Arrival.

Laos borders Cambodia, Thailand, Vietnam, Myanmar and China, and each of these countries has one or more checkpoints where you can enter Laos. Only in Myanmar is there still a lack of international checkpoints for Laos, but you have the option of entering near the Golden Triangle (Ton Pheung).

Danger! (siehe oben/Visa on arrivel) . Gradually the Visa on arrival will no longer be available at more and more border stations (see above / Visa on arrivel) . In this case, an advance visa or an e-Visa is required. But the latter is also not accepted at all border crossings.

Entry requirements in Laos

Laos has no unusual entry requirements, you should only make sure that the execution of Buddha figures is prohibited. If necessary, these will be taken from customs.

The importation, possession and consumption of drugs are also prohibited in Laos.
